What are the Development Milestones for a Preschool Child?

Children usually reach development milestones in the same order, but at their own pace. When you monitor the development of your child, it is essential to understand that there may be a discrepancy of between six to eight months between the development guidelines and your child’s development.

Development milestones allow parents to plan activities that are appropriate for the age and development stage of a child. The milestones are based on the skills and abilities that a preschool child should be able to achieve by a certain age.

Development Milestones for Preschoolers

  1. On a social level, a preschool child can be expected to greet familiar people, participate in simple group games, perform simple tasks and interact with peers.
  2. Cognitive development milestones include the ability to count to five, identify objects, draw basic shapes, match identical images and recall familiar objects.
  3. Preschool children should be able to recover from anger tantrums and be cooperative, verbally express feelings, identify emotions in others and express displeasure verbally rather than physically.Development Milestones for a Preschool Child
  4. Creative development milestones include the ability to assign roles, use imaginary objects and use language to create a plot.
  5. Your preschool child should be able to ask purposeful questions, use complete sentences, sing songs and tell a story.
  6. Physical development milestones include jumping over obstacles, balancing on one foot, throwing a ball, building with blocks and cutting paper with a scissor.

If your child is unable to perform some of the milestones adequately, or not at all, consult with your pediatrician. Activities and playtime games should be age- and development-appropriate.
